What Was the Process Like Before You Started Your Business?

Updated: Feb 24, 2022

In 2018 I began taking an online business program called “Overwhelmed to Overbooked” by Micala Quinn and it was designed for mothers who are working their way to be able to stay at home with their children and still earn an income. I was extremely skeptical at first and didn’t believe it worked until I began seeing more and more women become successful from it. I studied the business process every night I came home from work after putting my son to bed and on the weekends and during his nap times. I was determined to make this work and sure enough I had a few interviews to be a Virtual Assistant, working on small business’s social media outlets and marketing for them. It was a great starter business for me, and I HIGHLY recommend you taking a look into it. I will provide the link below for you! www.micalaquinn.com/lfa/

In 2019 Jason and I had started talking about opening our own family coffee business (Jason has been a Coffee Roaster for the past 8 years). We spent long hours researching, studying, and took business classes at the local Small Business Development Center to become more knowledgeable about what we need to do to begin this process. I will also provide the link to the Small Business Administration, because they provide an unlimited number of resources for starting your own business as well as after you begin. www.sba.gov/

A few months went by, and my husband received a job offer he couldn’t pass up and so we put our business research to the side for the time being. Deep down I was disappointed and felt like giving up, but I knew I couldn’t. My mind was made up and I was determined. I wanted to start a business no matter what and I would do whatever I needed to do to make it work.

2020 the COVID-19 pandemic finally hit the US hard and caused nothing but chaos. Working in the medical field our department became the main line you call when you have any symptoms of COVID. I was one of a small group of people who had to receive calls for our ENTIRE town, and I was not getting a pay raise by taking on even more responsibilities. Protocols changed daily and we had to stay on our toes and adjust to the new findings by the CDC every single hour of every single day. This took a toll on my body about 6-7 months into the pandemic. I decided to take a medical leave for my mental health. I decided to leave my job for good three months later and it was the most terrifying decision I have ever made. I felt like a failure for my son, my husband, and my family. I had no idea what was going to happen next.

Soon enough I pursued another path and decided to go back to school to become a real estate broker. This has been one of my passions for a few years since my father passed in 2016 and I was determined to receive my license. I am currently studying to take my national and state exam to become an Oregon Real Estate Broker as we speak. I know what you are thinking, “Wow this woman is all over the place isn’t she?!” I would think that also if I was reading this story! As I was going to school for real estate, I was spending long hours researching products that were growing in sales due to the pandemic. I noticed a significant difference in the health, wellness, and beauty industry that these products were becoming the most popular. I also wanted to create something that was going to make a difference in someone’s life and the one that stuck out to me the most was a collagen powder supplement. I was in fact taking this product daily already! Collagen is one of the most abundant proteins in the human body and if I would be able to create it without any chemicals or fillers, I would accomplish one of my biggest goals. A light bulb went off in my brain and I told myself I am going to make a collagen powder blend with quality sourced ingredients and bring it to men and women all over the world.

In January of 2021, Jason and I registered our business name The Quality Kays LLC and this is when our journey takes off from here. We are both now small business owners and Jason is still an in-house micro coffee roaster! Our health and wellness business The Quality Kays officially launched to the public on October 10, 2021, and our Multi Collagen Powder is now available to buy off our website www.thequalitykays.com. My dream finally came true of owning my own business and becoming a stay-at-home mom with my wildly growing little boy!
